WWDC 2011 Reveals OS X Lion and iOS5

The New Notifications System for iOS 5 Devices.

June 6, 2011

SAN FRANSISCO - Apple announces the next generation Mac and iOS operating systems at this year's WWDC. The biggest new features for OS x Lion is the Mac App Store with in-app purchase and auto save. The new OSX Lion will be available in the Mac App Store for $29.99 USD in July.

On the mobile side, iOS has gotten some great new features too. A new messaging service that works for all iOS devices and not just the iPhone. A big surprise Apple revealed was the new notification system in iOS 5. The surprise is that they have copied the Android way of sliding the top down to see all the notifications. The new iOS 5 will debut this fall for iPhone 3G S, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation, iPad, and iPad 2.

From mobile devices to going really mobile, Apple took the wraps off of their new iCloud. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, talked about how iCloud would store all your content and push it to all your devices, including PCs. It does automatic daily backups to the cloud. Apple is discontinuing the MobileMe service and the new iCloud will be free to users with an @me.com mail account. One feature that Jobs announced that no other competitor has is iTunes Match. When you pay 24.99 a year, they'll match any song in your iTunes library that wasn't purchased on iTunes to iCloud. These are really great new features for Apple users. Apple has improved upon their ecosystem and made sure that it's at least as competitive as the competition. Apple made an impressive showng at WWDC despite comScore reporting on June 3rd that Google was the top smartphone platform at 36.4% for the three month period ending April 2011. As predicted, Apple showed off no new hardware. It'll be interesting to see when Apple reveals the next generation iPhone.
